Stories about renewable energy investment, Alberta solar, and battery-powered planes!
Hi all,
We’ve switched to a Substack format for the Energy Charts since we’ve officially reached the limits of the University of Alberta Gmail system. It’s a good news story, since we have over 1500 subscribers now to our mailing list.
This week’s Energy Charts are posted at https://aleach.ca/charts and feature four interesting chart write-ups this week.
The most interesting one for me this week, sourced via Brad Plumer, is a chart from a Rystad report on energy investment that shows renewable investment breaking records and surpassing oil and gas investment amid the European energy crisis.
We’ve also got stories on battery-powered planes, Alberta solar and oil and gas emissions.
I’m excited about this new format, so watch for a few more changes as we integrate the Substack platform over the weeks to come.
Rather irrational record breaking investment in wind & solar since we know that is essentially the cause of the energy supply disaster in Europe and to a lesser extent in the US. The rational thing to do would be to see a sharp drop in wind & solar investment. And also irrational is that the chart shows global investment in rooftop solar at about 40% of utility solar. Since rooftop solar is ~ 3X the cost of utility solar in $/MWh and has a lower quality in terms of the output curve, it means major amounts of solar subsidies are thrown down the sewer for political reasons. Essentially gifting cash to wealthy homeowners with increased utility bills for the poor who can't afford such extravagances.
Also the authors seem to forget that hydro and geothermal are also renewables.
